Scott Ross - Solid Cut Stoneware

SR 8, woodfired stoneware w/natural ash glaze, 5 x 8 x 7 inches

SCOTT ROSS - SOLID CUT STONEWARE

October 29 - December 19, 2015

Reception: Saturday, November 7th from 3 - 6pm

Spun Smoke is pleased to present Scott Ross in our fifth ceramic exhibition. On view are solid cut clay forms that suggest function. Ross began the small sculptures as studies for larger ceramic works, however they soon required a focus unique from their larger possibility. Although the formal and organic forms resemble vases and tea cups, as you turn the vessels the formal collapses to slabs folding upon themselves, torn rough edges yielding to smooth defined angles. All vessels on view are wood-fired over several days resulting in lustrous ash glazes.

An Assistant Professor of Sculpture  at Kentucky State University, Ross was invited to Foshan, China to participate in a month long wood-firing festival in 2007.  In 2008 he worked with sculptor Nino Caruso in Todi, Italy as his studio assistant for his upcoming retrospective "On the Road."  He worked as studio assistant to Peter Callas for 1 1/2 years further learning the art of wood-firing. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
